We examined if probiotic BMD could reduce bone loss associated with estrogen deficiency in ovariectomized(ovx) rats which simulate postmenopausal conditions of osteoporosis. Normal bone mass was set to 100%，and the bone mass of osteoporosis caused by OVX was set to 0%. The results show oral supplementation with probiotic BMD,100% can increase the percentage of bone mineral density, number of trabecular and trabecular area percentage up to 12~28% in the OVX rats. These data suggest a therapeutic potential for probiotic BMD in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
◎Oral supplementation with probiotic BMD can stimulate bone formation by increasing Transforming growth factor-beta(TGF-β) and Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). Probiotic BMD also increases the secretion of osteopontin (OPN) and osteocalcin (OCN).
◎Oral supplementation with probiotic BMD can reduce the activity of osteoclast by decreasing tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptides (NTX).
